L'homme est communication. la caresse d'amour de la mère pour son petit ; le dur choc du percuteur sur le rognon de silex ou sur le bloc de quartz pour oeuvrer le premier outil créent, par là-même, rythme et harmonie ; la main souillée qui s'imprime sur le sol ; le doigt vagabond qui trace ses méandres sur le sable des grèves ou la terre des limons sont autant de faits universels, marques d'une "osmose gestuelle". La communication s'impose : les piroguiers audacieux, sur leurs embarcations de roseaux, de bois, ou leurs coracles de cuir, profitant de la baisse du niveau des océans, doublent les migrations vers les Amériques ; vers le continent austral. Tout est communication ! La noire et brillante obsidienne est objet de troc ou de colportage. Le silex blond de Touraine, aux "cachettes" mercantiles, la dure dolérite du Morbihan jalonnent de nouvelles voies de communication, couvrent l'ouest de l'Europe. Vers 15000 avant J.C., la lampe à graisse de Lascaux, le briquet de Chaleux, contemporains de la merveilleuse aiguille, lancent Cro-Magnon à l'exploration et à la conquête d'un nouvel espace, celui des cavernes et des ténèbres vaincues ! Les parois des grottes et des cavernes apportent, enfin, des supports durables aux graphies innombrables. Elles sont notre première "littérature en image" ! Drames ou anecdotes se poursuivant (se conservant !) sur écorce ou sur cuir nous offrent les premières formes écrites du langage, avec les multiples signes abstraits qui les accompagnent : leur vocabulaire graphique est fort étendu, quoique encore énigmatique pour nous. L'écriture se prépare ! Mais quid de ce langage ? De rares toponymes, antérieurs à la grande famille linguistique indo-européenne, chère à Georges Dumézil, ne serait-ils pas datables ? Les cartes de ces paléo-toponymes, vrais "fossiles du langage", nous sont ici dévoilées de manière suggestive.
